Adolf Berndt combined crisp modern letter forms with decorative elements from illuminated initials. Using masking fluid and water colours the outcome was a fresh, very individualised result.
We will study his artwork and techniques and work out a way of producing something inspired by this great artist and include touches of gold!
The workshop began with analysing some of Bernd's magnificent decorated capital letters, his colour schemes and his techniques. Everyone began by doing two capital letters, using masking fluid for one letter and no masking fluid for the other to see which method they preferred. Working with degraded complementaries and doing a series of colour swatches, everyone had the opportuity to experiment with a new colour range.
Val had not yet completed this striking design |
Marion H. designed her Christmas card with the word PAX |
Alison created a grid of rectangles with the focal point being the gilded diamond |
The aim in studying Modern Masters is not to blindly copy their work - although this can be a valid starting point - but to learn more about techniques, media, composition and gradually develop a greater visual vocabulary.
