You know how people are divided into seasons according to their colouring?
Well, I'm a "Summer" and this means blue toned clothing, rather than yellow-toned clothing and no black. Sadly the "no black" is true, but I still wear black only away from my face.
So the reds I can wear are a Permanent Rose sort of red (cold reds) not the bright Cadmiums (warm reds) Sometimes I feel quite rebellious about being told what suits me even though I agree, so I bought an orangey floral silk over-jacket. Not my colours really but it felt nice and wafty. The trouble is that it doesn't match my other obediently co-ordinated clothes, so I decided to dye it with Bahama Blue (turquoise) Dylon cold water dye. I thought the orange would go khaki and the pale orange a slightly murky turquoise. Anyway here are the results. The orange went maroon. I photo-shopped the "before and after" photos together so as not to bore you. I'm delighted with it.
My little grandson Nicky is an "Autumn" because he has auburn hair and he looks so sweet in his khakis, camouflage colours, bright oranges and lime greens. My husband is a "Winter" because he is very dark, so can carry off bright blue toned colours, although the real classic Winter is the Celtic milky white skin with raven black hair - she can wear deep crimsons, bright white or black. Browns and yellows do nothing for her. The other season is Spring - the people with honey gold tans and they can wear light bright warm colours turquoises, lime greens, peachy pinks.
Ah yes, Turquoise - being both blue and yellow it's one of the few colours that suits most people.
So here is the synopsis:
Blue toned colours - all blues, cold greens, cold reds are for people with blue toned skins, cold khakis, silver and taupe. No yellows or browns,
The Winters have stronger colouring than Summers so can wear more vivid versions of cold colours. Summers wear antique pink, winters wear bright crisp pink.
Yellow toned colours - most yellows, warm greens, orangey or warm reds, browns, warm khakis, gold, turquoises are for people with auburn and strawberry coloured hair, golden skins - like the Scandinavian tans
The Autumns have stronger colouring than the Springs so can wear stronger versions of the colours.
So next time you hear about people having their colours done, that is what this is about. And of course its not all black and white (excuse the pun) and you can push the boundaries because its really boring being told what to wear! But its worth looking at your face in the mirror and seeing if your outfit wipes you out. Also its quite fun to look at people and think about what season they are.
