Ahh, yes, the free cardboard rolls - well it's best if they come with a man who has a saw in his hand, as mine do!
When I made my banners I rolled them on the outside of a roll and then rolled cotton duck (light calico type of canvas) over them and tucked in the sides. My sister in law who is a patchwork quilter suggested I cover them in fabric stitched onto the roll so that they don't slip around and crease.
Then I got totally carried away and stitched ties onto the outside calico, with written instructions.
I had to store the rods somewhere because when exhibition work gets moved from one venue to another its best to try to make it as easy as possible for the hanging committee. So, being on the lunatic fringe of this operation I stitched a little bag into the centre to hold the rods. Voila!
Now I want to tell you a really sad story that comes with a warning and a moral (Victorian style) My s.i.l also told me about one woman who stored her patchwork quilt in a black rubbish bag and at the end of the exhibition it had disappeared - with the rubbish. I feel sick when I hear stuff like that.
