It says: "Eadem Mutato Resurgo" - and its' translation: "although changed, I arise again the same" by Jacob Bernoulli, a Swiss mathematician (1654-1705). His brother and nephew are also named among the top 100 mathematicians of all time by James Dow Allen. Apparently Bernoulli wanted the Golden Spiral on his gravestone but this was misunderstood and the carving is an Archimdean spiral. Duh!
