A is for Ox

The 2011 Oxford Summer school began with about 400 participants meeting their tutors in the tutor exhibtion hall then setting up in classrooms to begin a week of art, craft, music or drama. Our group are spending two days finding new approaches to add words to artworks or books using letters which have a handcrafted look, in an alternative style to edged pan lettering.

Susanna Evans, Kit Tyrrell, Rosemary Howden
Vicky Farren, Annie Hogg, Judith Ferns
Diane Burch, Cynthia Harper, Lesley Sherbourne
Averil Otis, Cathy Park

Everyone began by producing covers for their exemplar books using simple block letter cutouts, with some creative and exciting arrangements of letters. Names were added with stamped letters on copper strips.

Letter designs created using rubber stamps designed by each person, metal punches and stencil letter embossing such as the S by Judith Ferns. Woodblock letters from a printer's tray were also used to good effect by Kit Tyrrell - see below.

Each person left with a neatly bound book, Japanese style; filled with many choices of alphabet, including pen written letters after copying text blocks by Hans Joachim Burgert.
