Margaret Stanley asked me how I use watercolours in calligraphy. The one way is of course to create backgrounds and for lettering, so I'll show one on Monday; but I recently found a new way of working.

Calligraphy and watercolours
It's Friday the 13th today. Thank goodness I am not superstitious. And anyway, my new kitten Misty, is Payne's Grey, not black. Whew!

We went on a Kalahari Safari last March and I was determined to to a painted journal. I don't really enjoy painting realistically and ended up trying to echo the feel of the landscape – which is vast with horizontal bands of colour. I then drew a tiny detail and wrote about it. Back home I wrote detailed explanations about each illustration and bound the book. It is currently on the 90th anniversary exhibtion of the Society of Scribes & Illuminators (SSI)
