Watercolour Palettes

Palettes on paint boxes are usually enamel and they work well except I find them too small and too messy. I have always asked my workshop participants to bring a white china plate or a large white tile – both breakable and heavy-ish.

Here is the home-made palette – thank you to Margaret Stanley for letting me share this excellent idea. Because the blobs of paint from the tubes go on the rim it stays clean (relatively) and there is a nice big mixing area. When I use a tile I am such a messy painter that I always "contaminate" the fresh colours.

This is much better. Then when you have finished painting, wipe up, let the blobs dry and masking tape the plates together, paint sides on the inside. How cool is that!
