Christine Burt

For my "Memories" workshop, I want to be able to transfer photo images onto fabric.
I have done over 20 experiments transferring images to paper (as opposed to printing directly onto paper) and a few transferring the image onto fabric. The image is enlarged to 10cm from a tiny ployphoto taken of my mother in 1946. It is an exceptionally good photograph, which helps.

1) Colour printer and thinners to transfer to cotton duck fabric.
2) Ink-jet printer and acrylic matt medum to do the transfer.
3) Ink Jet printer and specially treated fabric.
I rather like the first one but it only just works. The second one makes the fabric stiff and is greenish. The third one, although the best quality, is somehow a little too mechanical for me.
I have rejected the plasticky decals as found on some T-shirts.
I haven't experimented with fading or washing. I'm not worried about washing – after all, we don't wash our paintings! Also, I would certainly want to add stitching to give these photos some integrity if they are to be incorporated into a design.
