Seville Orange Time

It's that time of the year again and my Seville oranges looked so beautiful on the blue porcelain plate that they demanded I do a painting before making the marmalade.

The trouble is, I also had to shred all the oranges to get on with it, so in the end I had a Seville morning – painting and then while the washes were drying I shredded the fruit for soaking. I was only painting one orange and by the time I had shredded the other 4, I was on the last wash.

I began this painting not knowing how I would approach the plate – vaguely thought of doing a "naïve" with the plate viewed from above and the orange three-quarter view, but the challenge of perspective won. Just a little painting for my sketchbook, nothing special! Vaguely wondered about writing "Seville" in pressure-release pencil, but it looked complete and I liked the funny little curls arising like steam.

  1. Beautiful! The blue plate reminds me of the fragments of china I like to collect.
