The makeover is complete.
So with my spring clean I have even made colour swatches to match the layout in my new 48 pan watercolour box. I've found the easiest way to make swatches is to do it in two strokes only – one for a pale wash, then when dry a more solid colour with a narrower square brush.
Then I cut it out and glue it on. Quick, no worrying about painting in the lines! I have a separate box for yellow because I'm a mucky painter and dip from one colour into another.
This way I can turn yellow into lime green and still have clean yellows when I want them.
I have a book by Wilcox* in which he rates different makes according to permanance and handling. Some paints were "dissed" as long overdue for scrapping.
Bye bye Hooker's green, Sap Green (hooray) Rose Madder Genuine (sob) and very sadly, dear Alizarin. Hello Quincridones as long as the other ingredients are good too!
*Wilcox, Michael The Wilcox Guide to the finest watercolour paints (1991) Artways- many of the paints will have been reviewed by now - 10 years down the line, but the paint serial number is included. He examines paints by 19 different colourmen. Everyone comes under fire, but USA Binney and Grumbacher emerge well!
