Diary 2012

21 January 2012
Gloucestershire Scribes
Skating on thin ice with Watercolours
Watercolours splash, run and mix and generally take on a life of their own. They are also wonderful in calligraphy for their translucency and subtlety. We will explore colour ranges by mixing colours and consider the versatility of watercolour in calligraphy.

28 January 2012
Newbury Embroiderer's Guild
Memories
We all have memories which we would like to capture. The memories could be of a person or an occasion. If it is an occasion, a photograph or strongly contrasted photographic or drawn image of something to symbolise the occasion would work well. The text will add something to the image to enhance its meaning for you.

3 March 2012
Oxford Scribes
The Art of Adolf Bernd
Adolf Bernd combined crisp modern letter forms with decorative elements from illuminated initials. Using masking fluid and water colours the outcome was a fresh, very individualised result.
We will study his artwork and techniques and design a small stylised decorative letter.

20 April – 22nd April
Great Missenden
Untraditional Gilding
In creative loosely painted work, a smudge of gold is appropriate, or perhaps a small area of gold with writing over it as part of a textural background. We will be using real gold as flat gilding on Gum Ammoniac and Modern PVA based gold size. Gilding materials will be transfer gold.

28 April 2012
The Art of Hermann Kilian
Kilian's work is epitomized by classical simplicity with an underlying tension within every letter. Beginning with classical forms then moving on to modernising these using ligatures, reversals and other capital forms we will create a piece of work in graphite

24-28 July 2012
Oxford Summer School
Drawing words and writing pictures
Just how can we combine text and illustration to create an integrated design? This workshop is for calligraphers and would-be lettering artists to learn drawing skills combined with modern handwritten letters. Learning how to look, and enabling the right side of the brain can awaken drawing skills. We will create some exciting pieces of stylised work combining monoline lettering and drawing using various tools and techniques.

The less experience you have with drawing, the more you will enjoy this workshop! It can be scary stepping out into the unknown, but letting go of preconceptions about your ability can free your hidden ability. At the end of this workshop, most people are amazed at what they are able to produce.

19-24 August
Great Missenden Summer School
The Strap Line
This course aims to use letter design in textiles. Working with stitching and coloured fabric, we will ceate a band of lettering which can be made in any size; e.g. as a long narrow banner, an edge to a quilt or even the strap of a bag.

A band of exciting letterforms will be designed using coloured paper and scissors, then interpreted in coloured fabric (with an option of using transluscent fabrics) and machine or hand stitchery onto a plain medium weight background fabric. By the end of the course, the piece should be well on the way to completion.
Participants are welcome to use the design as a springboard for their own interpretations or work with the design brief.

20 September
Fareham Embroidery Guild
Text(tiles)
Words can be added to textiles by embroidery, printing or applique. We will look briefly at a way of doing delicate whimsical stitched lettering, and then glance at printing options. Our main project will be to create versatile modern letter designs using coloured paper and scissors, which can be used as rubber stamps or as applique.
