Graphite Lettering

I have been working on pencil lettering for some time now – in fact ever since producing a peice of work about 8 years ago of a strelitzia where the stacked letters began in coloured pencils and ended in graphite.

(I will show you the strelizia tomorrow)
I love pencils – I love sharpening them handling them, using pressure for darks and the gentlest of touches for lights. I don't even buy fancy pencils – mine come in boxes of a dozen from WH Smith when they are really cheap in September. If I buy a box at a time, I can find them and lose them for a whole year as they get shorter (and some are chewed by the dog, and some are lost forever). They are labelled HB, but in terms of properly graded pencils are probably between a B Pencil and 2B pencil. Crisp thin lines and quite dark lines with pressure.

In fact you will see in my work that I'm beginning to combine pencil drawing and watercolour…
b.t.w. It's my birthday today and I'm going to spend it on an island in Malaysia, painting and drawing.
