The Cartouche

The cartouche concept comes from Egyptian hieroglyphs. It is an oval with a horizontal line at one end, with enclosed "text" (pictograms) and was used as a royal signature for the pharoahs.

I am using it as a title which becomes a part of the composition through placement. It consists of a box with a title /signature done in stylised lettering and is used in the same way as the Japanese seal was used in artwork – as a signature, but very carefully placed.
This is inspired by Japanese art and Charles Rennie Mackintosh who I feel does them as an afterthought; well placed of course, but not of great importance.
I can't put CRM's work in, because of copyright, but have a look at his flower studies. He is a very inspiring artist. Google Images: "Charles Rennie Mackintosh flowers" My cartouches are about 2cm square and don't reproduce well as they are in pencil on rough watercolour paper. I will have to do them much larger then reduce the size for the orchid range. Which I'll do once my arm is fixed.
