While we were driving through the golden grass at sunset, the grasses sparkled and glistened in the evening light and I wanted to get that feeling.
However there were no grasses like these in the camp and nowhere to stop enroute. (as if my companions wanted to stop in a game park for me to paint grass!)
I use my little digital camera a lot.(Sony Cybershot T-90). At one point I saw some during a lunch stop and took photos for a careful drawing. I made a mental note of the evening colours and then combined the two.
Actually nothing quite substitutes painting from life - somehow being able to peer closely, move away, smell the scent and feel the air all gives a painting a dynamism that I can't equal in the studio.
I sometimes use the camera to take photos after painting for my records and sometimes to help me get a tricky bit "right" if the perspective seems really odd. Its handy! Its also useful for the blog.
I hunted all over the internet for the name of these grasses and all I could find was that the petal-like twirly bits are called inflorescences. Which is a nice word anyway.
The grasses look like the amazing photos one can take of sparkers in the dark.
