Stitching the Banners

I wanted to stitch the Fibonacci spiral and the radiating lines of the Theodorus' Wheel. In addition I wanted to "pierce" the fabric with an element of the designs.
I felt that plain running stitch would have the most integrity in keeping with the screen printing and for Theodorus' Wheel I used a medium weight pure silk thread for the coloured banners from Mulberry Silks: www.mulberrysilks-patriciawood.com. I also did some random metallic embroidery on top of the lettering to give it sparkle.

Theodorus Circles: I placed a circle the size of a 20p coin at the end of each "spoke".

Fibonacci Squares: In the design I have three squares, with their sides in a ratio of 8:5:3 in size and positioned 2:3 in distance, with the smallest one furthest away. This is in keeping with Fibonacci principles. I then rotated each square so that they were at different angles.

To create the piercings, I stitched Dissolvable Fabric (which looks like thin see-through plastic) in a small square over the silk area to be machine embroidered and with a fine zig zag and metallic thread, I stitched around the edges of the square. I then cut the silk away inside the zig-zag stitching, leaving just a square of plastic stitched on. I put the banner under the machine and had an embroiderer's hoop to keep it taut. I then embroidered in a "cross-hatching" style until the stitching looked dense enough. I washed it and the "plastic square" dissolved.
