I love my art-deco printing letters which I received as a gift from my daughter after she had been scrounging in antique shops in Tetbury. This is the first time I've really had the right occasion to use them.
I found that the best way to use them manually is to ink them up with a small stamp-pad (Versa seems to be a good make) by dabbing the stamp pad onto the block. I then press it down firmly onto Chinese rice paper which is in a wad, so that there is the right amount of "give". The ink takes beautifully on the rice paper.
I scanned the letters and fiddled in Photoshop with spacing and layout and sometimes with contrast and colour.
This way I can work fairly quickly without getting uptight about spacing.
Of course if this was an original layered piece, on stretched paper, it would not be as easy, but it is still do-able.
I even have some big letters to show who the owner is...(me) My brother visited me from Australia in December and admired my printer's tray. He also left his "mark" which I had not even noticed until now. See if you can find his name. (It was such a nice feeling and a tangible memory of a great visit)
