Construction of the Rose Window

1. Draw a circle, bisected through the middle.

2. Use a protractor and draw segments each with an angle of 15 degrees. This will give 24 divisions around the perimeter.
3.  Ist Circle of Squares: Measure the size of two segments from A to B as a straight line with dividers or a ruler, and using this measurement as the diagonal of a square, construct a square. Draw 12 squares around the perimeter of the circle.

4. 2nd Circle of squares: Measure from the bottom corners of two adjacent squares from C to D with dividers or a ruler, and using this measurement as the diagonal of a square, construct a square that fits between the first circle of squares. Draw 12 squares in the 2nd circle.

5. 3rd Circle of squares: Measure E to F and continue as above. Repeat the process.

  1. Hey there, I'm doing a project on Medieval geometry and I came across your post. Would you mind if I used your drawings in my paper? I will of course cite your blog as the source if that's okay with you. Please let me know. Either way, great job!
