Behind the Scenes - the safari

After showing you some of the work in the Letter Arts Review, I thought it might be fun to show you a small series of the backstage of some of my projects.

So here I am on Safari - it is midday and too hot to go out especially as the animals are hidden in deep shade. Everyone else is sleeping or reading. I'm painting, standing at the kitchenette, using sketches from the morning's drive. (the hat is lamentable!) It is just so hot that if that perspiration pours off you. At last I can understand the poem by DH LAwrence - "A snake came to my water trough, and I in pyjamas for the heat" - probably the only cool loose clothing he had, and cooler than bare skin.

and here is the photo taken on the evening safari of the butterflies sipping water. there were hundreds on them on a mud flat and at first we thought they were cacti - see yesterday's photo of my artwork of this...

The text was done at home on a thinner watercolour paper which was joined to make double page spreads.
Of course text in pencil is delightfully subtle - so much so that it is lost in photography.
More tomorrow.
